  • explains the steps to solving the answer with such ease. he is very engaging and is always willing to try and simplify the way of understanding the topics
  • He teaches very well in a sense that he pushes us to strive higher for our grades, and constantly makes sure that we are on track with our work. He checks each and every student’s work during every lesson to really ensure that we are at least attempting the questions. As he is closer to our age, we feel that we can relate and talk to him more comfortably.
  • Thoroughly went through the lesson with examples, give us the common mistakes of what tend to happen in exam/test, give us feedback if we make careless mistake.

  • Lecturer is very fun and engaging during lectures, when its time to joke, he jokes to make the class interesting for students, but when its time to get serious, he gets serious to get students to learn which is very effective.
  • He will always explain the content and provide us with practices to do and he is very approachable when you need assistance and help while doing the questions. Will help you and explain to you when you need help. Even if you are scared to raise your questions, he would always be walking around and approach you if he sees that you are confuse or need help
  • somehow manages to relate most abstract concepts into a real life situation, sometimes try to go further out of the syllabus in ways that is understandable which makes me wanna learn more about math

EMA2003 Engineering Mathematics 3, Apr 2024/25 (Rating: 3.76/4)

  • When going through the weekly tutorials, he would ask each and everyone to answer different parts and this makes me or rather those who are unsure to stay alert and to make sure we do the tutorials beforehand. I mean even if we do not understand even after trying ourselves, he would explain each and every step to us and in his way that ends up being rather simple to understand when it looks complicated. The lecturer is really engaging and nice and I felt that this is the best lecturer that I have had as he was also really approachable which is really important as students can then further clarify anything without hesitating. I would love to have this lecturer for every module. Thank you cher 🙂

  • He made the hardest topics east to understand using verious methods. He made me fall in love with math when it was my most hated subject in secondary school. He made math fun and honestly is the best teacher ive had throughout my entire life.
  • Lecturer was fun and interesting. Everyone in class enjoys his presence and always look forward to engineering mathematics 1 even when we feel exhausted the lesson before. He also ensure that everyone participates in class and was able to clarify any doubts through straightforward examples to improve the our understanding on the subject.

CS1231 Discrete Structures, 2023/24 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.6/5)

  • Questions explained clearly. Alternative solutions given, I like it. Use very good languages to explain difficult content, making them easy to be understood. Very helpful summary sheet.

  • Very enthusiastic in the subject, shares many tips and additional interesting pieces of info. His recorded videos are also very integral to my learning and he engages the tutorial group well. His summary sheet for each week is also very helpful.

MA1513 Linear Algebra with Differential Equations, 2023/24 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.7/5)

  • Used a metaphor of “recipes” to explain the concepts of vectors, vector spaces, linear combinations etc (basically all matrix concepts)
  • He is able to explain the tutorial questions with different analogies and it helped me understand the various concepts a lot easier and better. On top of that, he spends time outside of tutorial sessions to answer questions, and even hosted an online QnA session
  • He has a unique way of explaining certain concepts in order to make learning MA1513 more enjoyable and easier to understand. He is also a patient teacher who is passionate about maths.

MA2002 Calculus, 2022/23 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.8/5)

  • He is very well prepared as the takes the time to do the tutorial questions himself and he prepares bite–sized notes from the lectures for the tutorials and gives everyone one. He also teaches some quality–of–life methods that are easier to apply than the ones taught in the lectures.

He also provides a weekly summary sheet of the lecture content as a supplement to the module material. Additionally, Joel takes time out of his breaks to further clarify and doubts or questions that his students may have about problems. He makes a point to drill fundamentals and critical problem solving skills, rather than regurgitate answers.

  • Joel is an excellent teacher with exceptional grasp and understanding of the content that he is handling. With Joel’s patience and clear pedagogy, he is able to simplify and solve even the most complex problems.
  • Joel does not merely teach to fulfill the teaching objectives stipulated by NUS. He’s actually enthusiastic about his job 🙂 He takes an extra step to ensure beforehand by giving us an estimate of the difficulty of question and also entertains students’ questions without any judgement. Personally, he was happy to answer my queries and took extra time to clarify my unsolved misconceptions after class as well.
