• Very approachable and easy to talk to, understands his students and goes out of his way to make lessons fun, easy to understand and memorable
• Taught us very well and has a good structure of learning, very approachable and teaches us methods to do the questions more efficiently.
• very fun and engaging teacher, has an ability of getting everyone to do their work by being inclusive while not pressuring us with it
• The lecturer manage to explain difficult concept in a very clear and simple manner. The teacher is also very effective in handling the lesson flow. The lecturer also is very funny which makes the class vibe overall very fun and engaging
• he is incredibly easy to work with and gives actual constructive feedback when it comes to finishing assignments. classes in general are very free and comfortable as well
• he is a very relatable and passionate math lover. i learn a lot from him and he makes math interesting again

EMA2003 Engineering Mathematics 3, Oct 2024/25 (Rating: 3.8/4)

• explains the steps to solving the answer with such ease. he is very engaging and is always willing to try and simplify the way of understanding the topics
• He teaches very well in a sense that he pushes us to strive higher for our grades, and constantly makes sure that we are on track with our work. He checks each and every student’s work during every lesson to really ensure that we are at least attempting the questions. As he is closer to our age, we feel that we can relate and talk to him more comfortably.
• Thoroughly went through the lesson with examples, give us the common mistakes of what tend to happen in exam/test, give us feedback if we make careless mistake.

EMA1002 Engineering Mathematics 2, Oct 2024/25 (Rating: 3.71/4)

• Lecturer is very fun and engaging during lectures, when its time to joke, he jokes to make the class interesting for students, but when its time to get serious, he gets serious to get students to learn which is very effective.
• He will always explain the content and provide us with practices to do and he is very approachable when you need assistance and help while doing the questions. Will help you and explain to you when you need help. Even if you are scared to raise your questions, he would always be walking around and approach you if he sees that you are confuse or need help
• somehow manages to relate most abstract concepts into a real life situation, sometimes try to go further out of the syllabus in ways that is understandable which makes me wanna learn more about math
• very energetic teacher. Also good at explaining the lecture even though the video lectures are useless and also give students to more difficult questions to be able to think about the questions in the exam.

EMA2003 Engineering Mathematics 3, Apr 2024/25 (Rating: 3.76/4)

• When going through the weekly tutorials, he would ask each and everyone to answer different parts and this makes me or rather those who are unsure to stay alert and to make sure we do the tutorials beforehand. I mean even if we do not understand even after trying ourselves, he would explain each and every step to us and in his way that ends up being rather simple to understand when it looks complicated. The lecturer is really engaging and nice and I felt that this is the best lecturer that I have had as he was also really approachable which is really important as students can then further clarify anything without hesitating. I would love to have this lecturer for every module. Thank you cher 🙂
• The lecturer is exceptionally dedicated and passionate about teaching, going above and beyond for his students. He actively engages the class, ensures thorough understanding through regular practice, and provides detailed feedback to prevent careless mistakes. Additionally, he offers extra tips and shares his own methods, which have been highly beneficial for the class.
• He is THE BEST math teacher I had in the past 19 years of my life. He makes math sooo fun which is really rare. He is so passionate about teaching math and actually ensures that everyone in class understand the work. My grades wouldn’t be this good if it was not for his teaching method.

EMA1003 Engineering Mathematics 1, Apr 2024/25 (Rating: 3.71/4)

• He made the hardest topics east to understand using verious methods. He made me fall in love with math when it was my most hated subject in secondary school. He made math fun and honestly is the best teacher ive had throughout my entire life.
• Lecturer was fun and interesting. Everyone in class enjoys his presence and always look forward to engineering mathematics 1 even when we feel exhausted the lesson before. He also ensure that everyone participates in class and was able to clarify any doubts through straightforward examples to improve the our understanding on the subject.
• He always has so much energy when teaching his lessons and the method he uses to explain difficult topics makes the topic seem easier. It makes his lesson so much fun and interesting. He’s also very open to answering any of our questions and with his tips and tricks, it make e – math easier to learn and study for.
• My teacher is very enthusiatic and approachable. His love for Mathematics strongly echoes in the way he conducts the class. His energetic teaching style and patience for slow students has facilitated the student’s overall learning experience.
• Superrr nice person inside and outside class , this eases me to ask any questions even though it might seem very trivial. Best teacher with a great teaching style of teaching concepts and making us understand them instead of just asking us to memorize.

CS1231 Discrete Structures, 2023/24 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.6/5)

• Questions explained clearly. Alternative solutions given, I like it. Use very good languages to explain difficult content, making them easy to be understood. Very helpful summary sheet.
• he does not assume i know anything and explains everything slowly and clearly. his youtube videos also help
• Very enthusiastic in the subject, shares many tips and additional interesting pieces of info. His recorded videos are also very integral to my learning and he engages the tutorial group well. His summary sheet for each week is also very helpful.
• Very lively, very concise and makes use of great analogies in teaching difficult concepts, his energy really makes me want to come down for every tutorial and hes approachable

MA1513 Linear Algebra with Differential Equations, 2023/24 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.7/5)

• Used a metaphor of “recipes” to explain the concepts of vectors, vector spaces, linear combinations etc (basically all matrix concepts)
• He is able to explain the tutorial questions with different analogies and it helped me understand the various concepts a lot easier and better. On top of that, he spends time outside of tutorial sessions to answer questions, and even hosted an online QnA session
• He has a unique way of explaining certain concepts in order to make learning MA1513 more enjoyable and easier to understand. He is also a patient teacher who is passionate about maths.
• Joel’s tutorial classes are structured and well–thought out beforehand to ensure that the agenda is set out before class starts. The
• tutorial questions are handled with a clear learning objective and takeaway in mind. By covering key concepts and reiterating them throughout the tutorial session, Joel has made me feel much more confident in understanding the topics at hand. He is also great at putting things into layman terms and breaking down mathematical jargon into simpler language.
• Explains mathematical concepts in a clear, concise manner which is easily digestible and can easily be applied when solving questions. Prompts those who want to learn beyond the syllabus to attempt more difficult questions by providing them.

MA2002 Calculus, 2022/23 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.8/5)

• He is very well prepared as the takes the time to do the tutorial questions himself and he prepares bite–sized notes from the lectures for the tutorials and gives everyone one. He also teaches some quality–of–life methods that are easier to apply than the ones taught in the lectures.
• HE TEACHES SO WELL and he is really the motivation for me to go for my early morning tutorial. he also reply my answer via email very fast.
• Very effective and clear teaching, giving special tips that’s very helpful! His teaching style is also very engaging, Joel even spend time to consolidate and print out his own sets of notes for us!
• He is really approachable and friendly. He puts in a lot of effort to help us with questions even beyond the tutorial, and ensures that we understand everything. He explains concepts and solutions well. He is also very supportive and caring and encourages us whenever we face difficulties.
• Joel is an excellent tutor for this module, he displays a strong level of understanding of the mathematical concepts, providing simple yet accurate analogies to some of intuitions behind the more abstract aspects of calculus. His conduct of tutorial sessions are methodical and targeted at the most fundamental and core problems that students will encounter in the module, hence making effective use of the 1 hour tutorial session. He also provides a weekly summary sheet of the lecture content as a supplement to the module material. Additionally, Joel takes time out of his breaks to further clarify and doubts or questions that his students may have about problems. He makes a point to drill fundamentals and critical problem solving skills, rather than regurgitate answers.

CS1231 Discrete Structures, 2020/21 Sem 1 (Rating: 4.3/5)

• Joel is an excellent teacher with exceptional grasp and understanding of the content that he is handling. With Joel’s patience and clear pedagogy, he is able to simplify and solve even the most complex problems.
• Joel does not merely teach to fulfill the teaching objectives stipulated by NUS. He’s actually enthusiastic about his job 🙂 He takes an extra step to ensure beforehand by giving us an estimate of the difficulty of question and also entertains students’ questions without any judgement. Personally, he was happy to answer my queries and took extra time to clarify my unsolved misconceptions after class as well.

• He is a great TA that truly cares about what he’s teaching. He always prepares his relevant materials and spares time outside of tutorials to help and answer further queries.

• Joel is an excellent person who never lets his temper get the better of him, and always seems to have something witty to say. • I was struggling with H2 Math ever since J1 and all the more as I reached the new topics in J2. I found it difficult to keep up with the new concepts whilst trying to still figure out the previous ones that were taught to me in school. But Joel was able to break down the concepts to me in a way that I could understand, helping me not just memorise the steps to solve the questions but to understand the mechanism and rationale behind each step. This allowed me to apply the concepts flexibly to different types of problems.
